British Chess Magazine

GAWAIN JONES WINS, SHREYAS ROYAL SHINES • THE CHAMPIONSHIP CULMINATED IN A DRAMATIC FINISH AS GAWAIN JONES, THE YORKSHIRE-BORN GRANDMASTER, SECURED HIS THIRD BRITISH TITLE. JONES, KNOWN FOR HIS EXPERTISE IN SPEED TIE-BREAKS, TRIUMPHED IN A GRIPPING FINALE THAT SAW HIM FACE OFF AGAINST TOP SEED DAVID HOWELL. THE EVENT WILL ALSO BE MEMORABLE FOR SHREYAS ROYAL WHO – AT THE AGE OF 15 – BECAME BRITAIN’S YOUNGEST GRANDMASTER EVER.

A GAME OF DEATH: The poisoning scandal that shook Russian chess • Professional chess players are competitive and, sometimes ruthless towards their opponents (or anyone else for that matter) but a new kind of calculation has come to light: one rooted not in the elegant geometry of the board, but in the dark recesses of personal vendetta.

Training regimens of Grandmasters: HOW DO THEY DO IT? • SOMETIMES, SUCCESS IS DETERMINED WELL BEFORE THE BATTLE. FROM THE TRAILBLAZING METHODS OF MIKHAIL BOTVINNIK, WHO PIONEERED THE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO CHESS PREPARATION, TO THE MODERN-DAY ROUTINES OF CHAMPIONS LIKE GARRY KASPAROV AND MAGNUS CARLSEN, THE ART OF PREPARATION HAS EVOLVED DRAMATICALLY.

A GREAT PERFORMANCE BY ENGLISH SENIOR TEAMS • US won gold in the 50+ section, while the English team won first place in the over-65 event

HISTORIC MOVES: BRITAIN'S ROLE IN FIDE'S FOUNDATION AND GROWTH • From players and champions, to organisers, arbiters and major financers, Britons have given significant contributions to FIDE over the past 100 years

THE TEN GOALS FOR NEXT 100 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL CHESS FEDERATION • On July 20, 1924, the last day of the Summer Olympics in Paris, 15 delegates from all over the world signed the proclamation act of what was originally known as "Fédération Internationale des Échecs" or "FIE" (shortly after the acronym was changed to "FIDE"). Symbolically, precisely a century later, the representatives of the same countries met in the Town Hall of the IX Arrondissement, Paris, where the original act was signed, and outlined FIDE’s goals for the next 100 years.

CHESS AND GENIUS • Mind sports play a vibrant role in the lives of many acknowledged geniuses and, of the various mind sports, as readers of our venerable BCM will doubtless agree, chess is the king.

PROBLEM WORLD

GB HAVE WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!

New Guinness World Records Title: OVER SEVEN MILLION CHESS GAMES PLAYED IN ONE DAY! • On International Chess Day, July 20, a monumental achievement was realized as over 350 events took place worldwide, both online and over the board, setting the record for the most chess games played in 24 hours

CHARITY AUCTION TO FEATURE LUXURY ITALIAN CHESS SET • The Esmee Godwin Fund, a charity supporting the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton General Hospital, is set to hold its third charity auction on 21 September at Buckland Newton Village Hall near Dorchester, Dorset. Among the highlights of the event is a stunning Italian carved alabaster chess set donated by luxury games company Purling.
