The latest anthology from Guran (her fiftieth as an editor) brings together a wide range of fantasy fiction from the past year. The editorial scope of this collection is fairly broad, with the only real constraint being that the darkest fantasy stories are reserved for Guran's horror and dark fantasy anthology series, also released by Pyr. Overall this collection reflects Guran's long experience as an editor, and while every reader might not love every story, there is no story in this anthology that is less than solid and no fantasy reader will finish this collection disappointed. Some standouts included Sofia Samatar's ""Three Tales from the Blue Library,"" a set of short fables that are funny, tragic, and fantastic all at once. In Carlos Hernandez and C. S. E. Cooney's ""A Minnow, or Perhaps a Colossal Squid,"" the story of an executioner tasked with changing debtors to fish and murderers to birds is intermixed with a philosophical treatise by the next debtor sentenced to be transformed. All in all this is a strong collection certain to please both the casual reader and established fantasy fan alike.
