      Grades 2-4 When Mr. Hilton's class starts their unit on trees, the kids are eager to contribute. Each brings something to share, such as an acorn, a piece of bark, a leaf that's changing colors, and a picture of a bird eating a tree's berries. But Oscar shares a letter from their pen pals in Senegal in a village on the edge of the Sahara. Their whole village is planting acacia trees, which will provide shade, foster grasses that prevent erosion, and enable them to grow more food to eat and to sell. Excited, Mr. Hilton's class decides to plant an oak tree that will provide shade, food, and homes for animals, as well as oxygen. Both classes' initiatives will help combat climate change. An appended page offers instructions for other children hoping to plant trees. Creating colorful collages of photos and digital drawings, the illustrations have a playful look. The main text carries the narrative, while fast facts related to the topic are placed within the pictures. An upbeat read-aloud choice that presents information while encouraging global awareness.
