The second book in the hit Young Prince series from Ronald L. Smith, recipient of the 2016 Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award. I'm T'Challa. The Prince of Wakanda. Son of T'Chaka. And one day, I will wear the mantle. Thirteen-year-old T'Challa can't wait to go back to America to visit his friends Sheila and Zeke, who are staying with Sheila's grandmother in Beaumont, a small Alabama town, over their summer break. He's thrilled to be on vacation away from his duties as the Prince of Wakanda for a few weeks, and he's taking full advantage of his access to the amazing food and the South's rich history. But as T'Challa continues to explore the town, he finds that a man who goes by the ordinary name of Bob happens to be everywhere he is—and T'Challa begins to think it's no coincidence. When residents of the town begin flocking to Bob's strange message, and a prominent citizen disappears, the Young Prince has no choice but to intervene. T'Challa and his friends start to do their own sleuthing, and before long, the three teens find themselves caught in a plot involving a rare ancient book and a man who's not as he seems. Swept up in a fight against an unexpected and evil villain, T'Challa, Sheila, and Zeke must band together to save the people of Beaumont . . . before it's too late. Wakandan prince T'Challa, with the help of his friends, uncovers mysteries and faces new foes. T'Challa, the 13-year-old prince of Wakanda, continues his adventures in America in this second entry in the Young Prince series. This time he is visiting Alabama with his Chicago friends, Sheila and Zeke. Staying with Sheila's grandmother Miss Rose, the three are excited about all the fun activities they will partake in over the summer. But their revelry quickly gets interrupted thanks to a strange figure T'Challa encounters on multiple occasions, an acrobat called the Amazing Bob. Immediately, T'Challa gets a strange feeling about Bob, sensing that things are not what they seem with him. It turns out that the prince's instincts are correct, as Bob is really Achebe, a politician with seemingly irresistible charm who has been wielding his power to influence the townspeople. Achebe has devious plans that require T'Challa's unwitting participation and a spell book called the Book of Sins. It's up to the young Wakandan and his friends to figure out and foil his plot before it's too late and an irreversible price is paid. Smith delivers an action-filled story of friendship, youthful curiosity, and exploration that centers Black kids and is layered with anecdotes and storylines that highlight themes of social justice and power. Superhero fans will be satisfied by this latest installment. (Fantasy. 8-13)

Gr 3-7-In this standalone sequel to Black Panther: The Young Prince, Smith reunites Prince T'Challa with his American friends, Sheila and Zeke. Smith crafts a story that fully embraces the reader and transports them to a sweltering summer in Alabama, where T'Challa spends his summer vacation. Visiting Sheila's Grandma Rose, the trio plans to see the sites and take in all Birmingham has to offer. Vacation starts with a trip to the fair, where the crew see The Amazing Bob the Acrobat. A quick smirk and familiar accent alert T'Challa that there is more to Bob than meets the eye. His curiosity and suspicion are further established when The Amazing Bob shows up again on the following day when the group visits the famous Vulcan Park. Performing an act of daring and scattering fliers promoting a rally in town square, The Amazing Bob proves he is no mere carnival acrobat. Giving into curiosity, the trio attend Bob's rally and soon realize that trouble is brewing in Alabama. After locals start to go missing and T'Challa receives some disturbing messages, the three amateur sleuths set out to crack the case and maybe save the world. While a sequel, Spellbound, stands well on its own. Smith deftly incorporates American history and culture to create a rich backdrop that gives value to the actions of T'Challa and friends. Vibrant, descriptive writing creates a visual reading experience. All main characters are Black. VERDICT This is a must-buy for all collections. A great selection for reluctant readers and fans of Marvel movies and series. -Maryjean Riou
