It is preschooler Lulu’s first time at the beach and she needs to conquer her fear of the ocean in this hardcover picture book from the New York Times bestselling Ladybug Girl series.

Lulu has never been to the beach but she knows she is going to love it…until she sees just how big and loud the ocean is. She and her dog Bingo decide that they will make sandcastles, fly kites, and get ice cream instead of swimming. But then the ocean waves snatch Lulu’s favorite pail. This is a job for Ladybug Girl! When Lulu is Ladybug Girl, she is brave and nothing can stop her from rescuing her pail – and suddenly she is in the ocean and it is fun!

This story is the perfect preparation for a first beach vacation, or to explore a new experience with a preschooler. Mama and Papa are never far away while Ladybug Girl builds up her courage and confronts something scary for the first time.

For fans of Fancy Nancy and Angelina Ballerina, the Ladybug Girl series honors courage, creativity, and a love of nature!

Even though Lulu—in full ladybug bathing suit regalia—has never been to the beach, she knows that she’s going to love it. But at the edge of the water, where she’s dwarfed by a curling wave that spills over an entire spread, she isn’t so sure about going in. Luckily, there are other things to do, like building sand castles and getting ice cream on the boardwalk. Davis’s warmly expressive
illustrations capture Lulu’s trepidation and, in the end, her triumphant self-assurance: when her bucket gets drawn in with the tide, Ladybug Girl finally has to confront the ocean. A tender addition to the series. Ages 3–5.

Lulu is excited to swim in the ocean--until she sees how "big and noisy" it is. When her sandcastle pail is swept away, Lulu, a.k.a. Ladybug Girl, takes action. Soman's illustrations nicely juxtapose the ocean's diffuse shades with Lulu's red-saturated costume, constantly drawing the eye to Lulu. The text hits all of its points in a way that's a little too on-the-nose.
