The trilogy of Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet and The Story of the Amulet, all involve the same family and their encounters with the magical being The Psammead. The adventures of the five children proved one of the most popular of Nesbit's creations. The Story of the Amulet centres around the purchase of an ancient Amulet which can grant them their heart's desire, the return of their parents; but which first sets them on a journey through time to ancient Babylon, Egypt and Atlantis. But it begins in an old shop next to the British Museum...

This abridgment of this British classic lacks the author's distinct style, as well as a coherent story line. The dashing story of time-travel has been cut apart in an unfortunate manner. Large chunks of dialogue and description have been removed so that characters appear and disappear without explanation. Part of the time-travel ritual is not included, making the last chapters of the book confusing. While Anna Bentinck's narration is competent, her portrayal of the Psammead, the magical sand fairy from the Middle East, does not suit his mystical personality. Not even the remains of Nesbit's glorious story can save this endeavor. C.A. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
