Turn the pages of this thought-provoking book, and discover maps that challenge conventional wisdom, confront social and political norms and offer fresh perspectives on familiar landscapes.
This meticulously curated selection of 40 maps spans the ages, from ancient parchment scrolls to cutting-edge digital creations. Each map is a window into a different facet of our world, shedding light on the complex interplay of geography, geopolitics, art, history, science, and society.
Maps have always held the power to transport us, not just from one place to another, but from one state of mind to another. Beyond their utilitarian function, maps have an extraordinary ability to tell stories, reveal truths, and inspire revolutions.
They are not mere drawings of geographic boundaries, but gateways to the collective wisdom of humanity. You'll encounter maps that dissect the intricate tapestry of human migration, maps that unveil the secrets of the cosmos and maps, that expose the stark realities of our changing climate. These maps are not just illustrations; they are provocations, invitations to rethink the world.

Bonnett's (geography, Univ. of Newcastle; What Is Geography?) exploration of 40 pivotal maps--chosen for their disruptiveness and their ability to expand a viewer's point of view--includes a prehistoric wall mural discovered in Turkey (which some experts believe is not a map at all), a map of the Marshall Islands made of sticks and shells, a noise map of Mexico City, and an artist's speculative world map after an 80-meter rise in sea levels. Entries are arranged roughly chronologically, with a two-page photo of each map followed by a description of the map's creator, time period, purpose, and historical context. VERDICT A volume of fascinating maps, showing everything from the waggle dance of bees to the migratory routes of galaxies.

This collection of full-color, double-page-spread maps offers insights into subjects ranging from arguably the world's oldest map (a 9,000-year-old city map of atalhyk, which once thrived in what is now Trkiye) to a 2023 survey of land-surface temperatures in Spain during that year's devastating forest fires. There are whimsical maps, such as the 1653 French ""Map of Tenderness,"" providing insights into sections of Woman's Heart (vanity, coquetry, fickleness) and Man's Heart (money, power, ease), and speculative maps like ""Alkebu-lan,"" created in 2011 to imagine what the continent of Africa might look like had it not been colonized by European powers. Satisfying essays explain how the images should be interpreted and explore historical significance, geographic accuracy, provenance, and, in one case, how an artifact was determined to be a fake. One minor quibble is that the layout requires flipping back and forth between pages to alternately access text and images, but the intriguing reproductions mitigate any real annoyance. Whether surprising (""Mapping the Smells of a Seaside Vacation"") or sobering (""Europe in a World Without Ice""), this addictive compendium will attract curious browsers.COPYRIGHT(2025) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
